Student information. Impact of Brexit on current and prospective students. The United Kingdom (UK) has left the European Union (EU) on 31 January 2020.
If an EEA-type arrangement emerges, UK students coming to Ireland or Irish going to the UK will probably continue as are and vice versa. However, if a “hard”-Brexit emerges, then Irish students could be treated as international students; students studying in either jurisdiction may be classed as non-EU students and may be charged non-EU Fees.
Health insurance. During the Brexit transition period, the EU health insurance card (EHIC) was still valid for UK students. However as of 1 January 2021, you must take out an alternative health insurance policy. Visit the health insurance page for information on insurance requirements and the types of policy available. The transition period started on 31 January 2020 and will end on 31 December 2020. During this period British students will be treated the same way as EU students.
